New Horizons needed the Jupiter gravity assist to speed its trip to Pluto because Pluto's southern hemisphere was going into polar night, and they wanted to see as much of the southern hemisphere as they could. Missing Jupiter would have lost several years and a bigger chunk of that hemisphere. | |
