A coronal mass ejection (CME) is a massive burst of solar wind and magnetic fields rising above the solar corona or being released into space, or towards other celestial bodies of the Solar system. They are not to be confused with solar flares (a sudden brightening over the Sun's surface or the solar limb) or sunspots, even though they are often associated with such activities of the Sun. CME are more frequent during or near solar maxima.
