Apr 23, 2014 at 8:02 | comment | added | Zoltán Schmidt | @DavidHammen Rovers can bring several useful tools and deviced to Mars, but the amount of these stuff is limited since the rover must be able to move. If we wouldn't deal with being able to move, we may send even more tools and devices to measure and analyze - or am I wrong?

Apr 22, 2014 at 20:55 | comment | added | Quora Feans | I imagine the OP means to have a fixed lab at a convenient location, and a smaller rover collecting samples and bringing them to this lab. New more capable rovers could go further in the future and bring more samples. All instruments would be in the lab, and the rover would be designed just to move as far as possible, not carrying a lab on its back. Sounds like a good design idea to separate concerns.

Apr 22, 2014 at 18:50 | comment | added | David Hammen | And the point would be? What has been done is to send pre-fab buildings, except there's little if any room inside those buildings. They're called landers instead of rovers.
