Oct 25, 2020 at 12:40 | comment | added | Criggie | @BobJarvis-ReinstateMonica Well, today I learned something :) Also, some of Clyde Tombaugh's ashes are aboard New Horizon, so part of him will be the first human organic material to leave the solar system. Can't find info on where Mars was at the time or whether parts of deceased people count for this question.

Oct 24, 2020 at 21:13 | comment | added | Criggie | @RogerWood so - Jimmy Hoffa then ? But seriously, does the person have to be alive? Or complete? Would a few grams of ashes sent into space for internment count?

Oct 24, 2020 at 0:13 | comment | added | Roger Wood | Are we allowed to include "Starman"? Wikipedia says that this month he "will make its closest approach to Mars, about 6.9 million kilometres (4.3 million miles) away". en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elon_Musk%27s_Tesla_Roadster

Oct 22, 2020 at 13:39 | comment | added | called2voyage♦ | This question is fun because it's yet another reminder of how mindbogglingly vast space is that the movements of the planets themselves make more of a difference than the furthest a human has traveled from Earth.

Oct 22, 2020 at 7:11 | comment | added | uhoh | less-related but also space distance record questions: Puzzler: which Apollo 8 astronaut would have been positioned furthest sunwards 20 minutes after lunar insertion? (unanswered) and What is the farthest that a “human satellite” has been from their spacecraft?
Oct 22, 2020 at 7:10 | comment | added | uhoh | This is a really cool question! Earth's orbit moves it ±2.5 million km from the Sun, but Mars' orbit moves it ±21.3 million km. It will be interesting to find out if it was somebody in an airplane, or a space station, or a capsule to the Moon. Different but somewhat related and as yet unanswered: Puzzler: Precisely what maximum distance from the Earth did the Apollo 13 astronauts achieve?, also Who has been the closest to/furthest from the Sun?
